Rapidly Rising Canadian Swimmer Maggie Mac Neil

A Canadian Olympic champion in the making

The beginning of a champion

At the 2016 Canadian Olympic Swimming Trials at the age of 16, Maggie Mac Neil competed in her first national competition and finished 13th in the 100-meter butterfly and 4th in the 200-meter butterfly.

This would be the first of many successes on the international stage for the swimmer as she continues to make waves and break butterfly records.

Her accomplishments at the 2020 Olympics

At the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, 21-year-old Mac Neil won the gold medal in the 100-meter butterfly, with a time of 55.59 seconds, just 0.05 seconds ahead of China's Zhang Yufei who won silver, and the United States' Torri Huske who won the bronze after finishing in third place.

She also helped Canada win a bronze medal in the 4 × 100 m freestyle relay, along with Penny Oleksiak, Kayla Sanchez, and Taylor Ruck.

In an interview with CBC Sports, MacNeil said, "I have seen all of the work that I've put in, and I know that my training has prepared me for this"

Her latest accomplishments

In 2022, Mac Neil won three gold medals at the Canadian Swimming Championships in Victoria, British Columbia. She won the 50-meter butterfly, the 100-meter butterfly, and the 200-meter butterfly.

At the 2022 World Aquatics Championships in Budapest, Hungary, she placed second in the 100-meter butterfly and fourth in the 200-meter butterfly.

Mac Neil is currently a student at the University of Michigan, where she swims for the Michigan Wolverines.
