What is a Hurricane?

According to the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale, any storm with maximum sustained winds of at least 74 miles per hour qualifies as a hurricane. Hurricanes are tropical cyclones with organized thunderstorms that develop over warm ocean waters. Wind speeds reach between 74 MPH and 156 MPH.

After landfall, the hurricane will weaken as it moves over land. Once the storm loses its organized thunderstorm structure, it is no longer considered a hurricane.
