A strong earthquake has struck the eastern Russian peninsula of Kamchatka. The epicenter of the magnitude 6.1 tremor was located near the city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, and the quake was felt across the region.
According to the Kamchatka branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the earthquake occurred at a depth of approximately 30 kilometers (18.6 miles). Witnesses reported feeling the quake for several minutes, and buildings in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky were seen swaying.
